General Thoughts on the ARIAs 2006

OK... I just finished that mamoth post about clare bowditch, so i will go on to throw some other thoughts around.

1 - I believe, if you are good enough to get nominated for best album, you are good enough to perform. It would have been nice to see Augie March and The Sleepy Jackson get a go.

2 - Best Breakthrough? Is a bit subjective for my liking.

3 - Wolfmother. Glad they won 3 ARIAs. Also Glad they didnt win best album. I've talked about them lots, it will be good to see where they go from here.

4 - TV Rock. Will be a name that everyone will have forgotten in the not too distant future (Copland agrees with me, and basically, this point is more his than mine... go big fella).

5 - Eskimo Joe, were a little too excited for my liking to win the award (song of the year). Oh well, good luck to them. Its not like they have much shot at best group at the moment.

6 - Holly Throsby - YAY, nominated for best female. Glad Clare won it, but also glad that Holly got a mention!

7 - Human Nature... a bit tacky if you ask me.

8 - Midnight Oil, were very them... love for you to comment on that one grande.

9 - I loved the performance by Bernie, Clare and Kasey - the 3 part harmonies at the end were delicious.

10 - Bernard Fanning album of the year. I saw this coming. its not hard really. Its a good album, but for me, my vote for album of the year lies elsewhere.

Last Thoughts...
I'm so glad that it was balanced. I had this image of Wolfmother taking out 6 or 7... and well, no... they deserve 3, and thats good! Besides that... their acceptance speaches would have been insane by 6 or 7 wouldnt they?

ndeScary thing is, as I was watching the ARIAS, I was wondering what your blog reactions would be.

So to reply :)

1. No, it would not have been nice to see the Sleepy Jackson perform. Besides, in a small timeframe, they need to ensure the have balance between genres.

2. 'Best' anything is subjective. So we have to accept it for all of them or none of them.

3. Wolfmother. Like em. The best cover band out of Australia since Jet. Seriously tho, do like both of these bands.

4. Yeah, thats standard for just about any 'singles' based act. Especially dancey ones.

5. Glad they got excited. None of that too cool to be excited to be recognised indie bullshit that so many people have gotten into over the past few years. For me, it was seriously one of the highlights.

6. Meh. I know you'll jump right on this one, but Australia is seriously lacking in diverse, world class female artists. Watch them all follow the trend when Missy releases her NEXT album.

7. I love their new old stuff. Great voices, and if you can sing them, Motown can NOT sound bad.

8. Meh. once they get down off their high horses they will realise that a majority of their fan base are bogans who like their music but couldn't really care about their politics. And the Bono thing.. Man, I love U2, but that was just SO tacky.

9. Was disappointed by it. So much potential. So little........... well, anything really. Nice in an elevator.

10.Bernard Fanning = very cool man, very good songwriter. Album of the year? Nope.

I actually think that one of the most overlooked groups (seriously) was the Rogue Traders. Yeah, they sample everything.Yeah, they are pop. But they are bloody good at it.

I actually miss having these chats face to face :S Interesting to read your thoughts on my thoughts about your thoughts.

now here's my thoughts on your thoughts on my thoughts....
just the ones that i feel i need to thought on...

1. its not about who the act is... its about the fact that they got nominated for the BIG one.

3. here here

6. do i even need to comment? i think they type of female artist that australia produces, in and of its nature would not be atractive on a world stage. I think Kasey, Delta and Kylie might be the exceptions. i can see why you dont like clare and holly, but i love em!

7. wasnt motown a black thing?

8. yeah yeah... i agree with the bono comment though (but im bit over u2 though).

9. bring on the elevator!

10. you nailed it! i agree

there you go...
are we gonna keep this going until there are no numbers left?

OK, so lets engage on number 7.

Music has no colour. Phish are at times quite funky, yet they are ridiculously white. Likewise, James Marshall Hendrix, perhaps the greatest and one of the most influential ROCK guitarists ever. But hang on, isn't rock white?

Good voices + good songs = good music. I can't see colour on a CD.

Gotta admit, this comment form you kinda surprised me!

i guess my real problem with human nature doing motown is that they rip the soul out of it, make it boyband and leave it limp and lifeless with only tacky dance moves and matching suits remaining.

i agree that there are white guys that groove the living daylights out of it... and black guys that rock (mind you hendrix did both)...

for me its more about the beautiful symbiosis of comercialism, capitalism and exploitation that human nature encapsulate. why cant we all go buy some otis redding and be done with it, why does it take a bunch of middle class white boys to make accessible a music that embodied liberation and joy?

by a black thing, i meant that motown was a label that was comitted to signing black musicians and getting their music out.

maybe the way i worded it there came accross the wrong way, i meant no slurs racially, i just guess its just the tackiness of it all that bothers me.

By any means necessary. You have seen Standing In The Shadows of Motown haven't you? Artists from Ben Harper and Bootsy Collins to Joan 'what if god was a bus driver' Osbourne pay tribute to Motown.

It was never about black vs white, it was about good music. Surely you realise who played a part in penning a majority of motown hits.. And quite frankly I don't think you can get much whiter that Steve Cropper.

Personally, you know I hate boy bands, but props to them for maturing and delivering an album (havent heard the second yet) that does justice to the originals.

As for just listening to Otis and being done with it....... Knockin on Heavens Door and All along the Watchtower are probably two of the greater songs ever written. If they hadn't been reinterpreted, all anyone would know is poorly sung, badly played versions by their original authour. And that does not do either of those songs justice.

And for the record, Hendrix's version is THE definitive version of Watchtower :P
