some thoughts on the arias

watched the arias tonight in its entirity. good stuff...
a few things

i love that missy looked terrible. it proved to me that it doesnt take image to sell records and write amazing music. on the other hand missy, what were you thinking with that dress?
i think she deserved everything she won. Also, so glad she mentioned the artists she has toured with... great to see (go the waifs!)

glad to see ben lee take home a couple, i really like that album, really really got into it earlier in the year. i'm somewhat torn between liking the things he had to say, and realising that he is a bit of a tool. maybe thats a tension i myself am projecting onto him. think about it.

sarah blasco? no show? surely she should have got a spot to play a song with an album of the year nomination??? did she chuck a gurge and not come, or was she not asked to sing? i am deeply conflicted by enjoying some of her music, and not liking her cause of some stories ive heard about her band (thanx grant)

architecture ripped off? when showing the nominations for best contemporary adult album, they didnt show in case we die by architecture in helsinki. they are amazing, and should have got to play tonight (how funny would that have been)

what was with eskimo joe, i thought there was a reason i didnt like them much anymore, tonight i found it. or at least know the ball park to look in.

Keith Urban? Go home! back to america. why do we celebrate artists who contrbute very little to our scene? there were much better nominees there who actually do something here, in this country - i thought sara storer or paul kelly should have won it.

Lior, no awards, but some exposure. thats ok. i love lior, he writes good songs and sings them well. im glad our music industry is about those sorts of things.

discontinuity? being the only band to be nominated for best album, i thought evermore would have taken out best group. to be honest the only one of the 5 nominees i liked was powderfinger (and it would have been an injustice for them to win it) so frankly i dont really care. why blog it then ian??? i dunno?

lastly but not leastly... how many times did the j's get mentioned (at least 4). They really are doing alot to promote aussie music. the industry is very healthy at the moment, and i think the j's plays a fair part (or maybe a huge part) in that.

Well here I am.

Find a track by a group called The Ranch. Its called Clutterbilly. Once you have found it, lemme know, and I shall advance to checkmate. There is plenty of relevance to your last post.

And for the record, before your Aussiecentric rant, did you consider that Evermore are, in fact, New Zealanders?

yeah big fella, i had some internal conflict relating to NZ artists being at the arias. I somewhat think its wrong, but on the other hand feel that they contribute so much more than the likes of Keith Urban to the Australian industry, thats why no-one blinka an eye when Wendy Matthews is classified as an Australian, cause really, she might be Canadian too, but she's an aussie...

Oh.. and NZ you can keep Shihad, they're over-rated if you ask me (mind you I have never seen them live, but thats still my opinion, for now at least). As for Coldplay... oops i mean Evermore... whatever, either way with me.

It's not a night for who contributes to an industry. It's a night to honour that which we have produced. And Keith Urban is an Aussie. End of story.

Quoting their website the ARIAS... recognise excellence and innovation across all genres of Australian music.

So... Can is citizenship required? Does it mean you are in, and all others are out? whats the privisos...

Personally i think Keith Urban and Kylie Minogue obviously have things to do that they think are more important, and therefore should get stuffed!

As far as the NZ thing goes, its just typical Aussie thing to do. Maybe we should stop it? Would that count out Crowded House? I dont think so (as they had 2 Aussie members yeah?)

Anyways, you may be right... and i may be crazy. but that doesnt mean what is correct is right now does it.

And you just may be the lunatic I'm looking for.........

Fact remains that they are Australian. Crowded House were predominantly Aussie.

And they do have important things. sharing their art with the world. Don't have to like it, but what satisfaction is there in being the big fish in a small pond.

dont you just love public arguments?

I wonder if you cant be a decent sized fish in a big pond, but also regularly spend time in the small pond which is connected to the big pond by a canal. That way you also meet the needs of canal dwellers. Yet, maybe the small pond is simply a part of the big pond and then the canal is irrelevant. Or maybe there are many small ponds, it just some are so close to together, and the canals so small that they are considered big ponds.

think about that for a second eh?
